LaBaff Applauds Governor Cuomo Move on I-98

Canton, New York, January 9, 2014

St. Lawrence County Industrial Development Agency Vice-Chairman, Ernest J. LaBaff issued the following statement today in response to Governor Cuomo’s 2014 State of the State Address:

“I am extremely pleased that Governor Cuomo has recognized the importance to the North Country of improving our transportation infrastructure.  This is another example of the Governor demonstrating his understanding of the unique challenges faced by the North Country and his willingness to work with us to overcome these challenges.

We have some of the highest unemployment rates, lowest wages and highest poverty levels throughout the State.  Those who say “leave the North Country the way it is” are not concerned about its people.  The economic life of Northern New York will be greatly enhanced when I98 is achieved.

From a small committee formed in the late 1990s and with the help of so many people over the years trying to keep the issue alive in Albany, the Governor’s announcement is a giant leap forward.

Now that the Governor has made it a priority, the work begins.”

Ernie LaBaff is President Emeritus of the Aluminum Brick & Glass Workers International Union, and is a long-time proponent of economic and infrastructure development in the North Country.
