Main Grind Coffeehouse in Massena to Begin Roasting

Canton, New York, April 8, 2011 – The Main Grind Coffeehouse, Massena, is the recipient of a grant from the St. Lawrence County Local Development Corporation Microenterprise Grant Program.  The $17,328 in funds will be used to purchase equipment and inventory that will enable them to reduce costs by roasting their own coffee.

Growing up in an entrepreneurial family, Greg Hurlbut always knew he wanted to have his own business doing something he loved.  That is where coffee came into the picture.  In 2009 Greg began training one-on-one with a barista certified by the International Association of Specialty Coffee and went on to test and receive his own certification.

In November of that year he opened the Main Grind Coffeehouse in the St. Lawrence Centre Mall to cater to customers who, like him, care about the quality of their drip coffee and enjoy the culture of a small coffee shop.  The establishment uses the finest equipment and an upscale espresso machine that is operated only by trained baristas.  They serve a variety of specialty coffee and cold drinks such as lattes, frappes, smoothies, and locally brewed coffee.  Butter cream fudge is made on site as well as an assortment of baked goods.  A variety of gift items are also available including decorative latte and coffee mugs and travel thermoses.

Procuring and roasting their own beans will enable the Main Grind to control the consistency and quality of each batch of coffee ensuring a great end product.  It will also allow them to significantly reduce their costs and expand their products by offering coffee for sale by the pound.

“The mall has a unique customer base and sees a lot of Canadian traffic,” states SLCLDC Chief Raymond Fountain.  “We are pleased to provide Greg and the Main Grind with an opportunity to bring more revenue into the County, by expanding their product offerings, while at the same time, lowering operating costs by moving the roasting process in-house.”

“This is a great opportunity,” states owner Greg Hurlbut.  “I am grateful to have the chance to help not only my business but the economy of Massena and surrounding areas in at least some way through this grant.”

The Main Grind Coffeehouse is located at 6084 St. Lawrence Centre, Massena.  They can be reached at 221-8805, www.themaingrind.com, or you can “Like” them on Facebook.
